Malaria

Causes of Malaria

Malaria is caused by a female Anopheles mosquito, these mosquito have a deadly parasite called plasmodia which are transmitted by a bite.

There are 4 types of malaria each caused by a different type of plasmodia (singular Plasmodium). The four plasmodia that cause malaria are Plasmodia falciparum, Plasmodia vivax, Plasmodia ovale, and Plasmodia malariae.

Malaria used to be a major hazard in Europe and southern US areas, but the WHO (World Health organization) ordered fogging of an insect killing spray called DDT. If there wasn't a malaria outbreak in 3 years the WHO would declare an area malaria free. People eventual found out that DDT did major damage on wild life and many countries banned the insecticide.
